    Job Details:

    The Behavioral Health Therapist (BHT) provides intensive behavioral health services including diagnostic assessments, individual, group and family-based psychotherapy, and crisis intervention as needed. Responsible for collaborating with patients and families in developing an individualized treatment plan that will specifically address identified areas of concern. Responsible for assisting patients and their families in understanding ways to effectively manage symptoms and behaviors attributed to the identified behavioral health diagnosis (es). Assists families in effectively addressing complex personal and environmental difficulties which interfere with effective social functioning. Responsible for the delivery of clinical services which are available to the patient, the patient’s family, and other persons significant to the patient. Is able to work independently, is well organized, and identifies opportunities to work collaboratively with other units/departments within the hospital. Participates as a professional member of the interdisciplinary team and community agencies. Provides education/ consultation to health care professionals and the community regarding the impact of psychosocial factors. The BHT demonstrates and models Dayton Children’s values through effective interaction with patients, families, and treatment team members while providing excellent care.

    1.   Clinical Practice

    • Conducts Mental health Diagnostic, Risk, and Psychosocial assessments, and delivers crisis interventions as needed
    • Reviews referrals made to the program, determines appropriate treatment level of care, and communicates findings to the patient and family
    • Assists in the development and delivery of evidenced based, trauma-informed, intensive individual, group and family-based psychotherapy.
    • Evaluates patient/ family/ caregiver needs and supports the development of an individualized treatment plan.
    • Participates as an interdisciplinary team member in treatment/ disposition planning
    • Provides age-specific and developmentally appropriate care for patients
    • Effectively communicates clinical information to the interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate discharge planning.
    • Accurately completes all documentation in the electronic medical record in a timely manner.
    • Engages in mentorship and coaching with dependently licensed staff, and provides training supervision for students

    2.  Patient Safety

    • Promotes a safe patient care environment and safe practice within the Day Treatment program.
    • Maintains situational awareness and escalates safety or quality of care concerns appropriately according to chain of command.  Identifies concerns with clinical care environment or system and provides input for improvement to maintain patient safety.
    • Assists in verbal and/or physical intervention for safe de-escalation to reduce significant safety events.  Maintains certification and uses appropriate de-escalation techniques as trained by organization.
    • Involves the patient and family in developing a safety plan for discharge. 
    • Documents all interactions with community agencies regarding abuse reporting, disposition planning, etc.   

    3.  Regulatory Compliance

    • Demonstrates knowledge and compliance with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.  Identifies increased risks associated with behavioral health population. 
    • Adheres to all agency policies, procedures, and protocols, and supports leadership in compliance efforts to meet and sustain regulatory compliance efforts. 
    • Documents appropriately and thoroughly in accordance with departmental guidelines and CMS regulations. 
    • Demonstrates knowledge of and participates in organization and departmental performance improvement. 
    • Participates in clinical chart review to ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards for dependently licensed staff

    4.  Education

    • Evaluates and identifies the need for client/ family education based on psychosocial assessment.  Supports the philosophy of patient/ family centered care and recognizes the individual needs of the patient and family. 
    • Develops, utilizes and implements educational strategies/ programs to meet the client/ family needs that are based on the developmental level of client and family.
    • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to prepare educational programs which address the psychosocial dimensions of patient/ family care.
    • Provides in-services to medical staff including peers.  Provides educational opportunities for students. 
    • Provides training, coaching, and mentoring to dependent licensed workers/ staff as necessary. 

    5.  Maintains Clinical Skills

    • Participates in personal professional growth and development, and continuously seeks to improve the quality of care delivered.  Reads and keeps up to date on clinical/ professional issues. 
    • Completes CEU as required to maintain licensure in the state of Ohio.
    • Abides by the Ohio State Counseling, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Board Code of Ethics.  Maintains skills in area of cultural competence when providing services to various populations. 
    • Maintains high performance with adhering to policies and procedures of the department and hospital, including patient rights and confidentiality. 
    • Consistently attends staff meetings, completes competency trainings, and participates in educational in-services/ case conferences as planned.  Maintains documentation of attendance/ participation.
    • Participates in the individual performance process, setting goals for development participating in self-evaluation for progress.  Participates in peer evaluation process with truthful and meaningful feedback. 
    • Functions independently and arrives at appropriate solutions as a result of sound decision making, takes initiative to follow through on tasks, functions as a change agent, facilitates effective problem solving, and demonstrates flexibility by adapting to new, different, or changing environments that are complex in nature. 
    • Demonstrates the ability to use the Healthcare Learning System to complete all mandatory education requirements.  Accepts accountability for timely completion of unit specific competencies and educational requirements. 

    6.  Collaboration/ Coordination of Care

    • Leads the coordination of care, acting as a liaison between staff, physician, patient, and families for quality services.  Promotes a positive team-oriented environment that is conducive to learning.
    • Develops and maintains a positive relationship with community agencies.  Maintains current on information related to community resources appropriate to age, need, and ability. 
    • Makes mandatory and supportive service referrals in a timely manner.  May assist in follow-up calls with families to ensure quality connection of services. 
    • Demonstrates interpersonal communication and behavior that reflects respect for a diverse population of patients, families, peers and others (i.e.: includes gender, religion, and national origin). 
    • Utilizes effective communication skills with co-workers, patients, families, and ancillary departments as a member of the interdisciplinary care team.
    • Demonstrates appropriate use of resources within the organization.  Decisions, actions and communication reflect sensitivity and ethical consideration for patient, family, peers and others. 
    • Communicates effectively through verbal and written information in a timely manner and maintains effective interpersonal relationships that allow two-way feedback.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education

    Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work

    Years of Experience

    2-3 years clinical experience with children and adolescents

    Clinical experience with children and adolescents, preferably in an intensive day treatment and/or partial hospitalization setting

    Specialized Training

    LPCC, LISW.  Current license in Ohio---Counselor, social work, or marriage and family therapist board.

    Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training, CPR

    Other skill/competencies required (communication skills, computer skills, customer service skills, etc.) 

    Exceptional verbal and written communication and clinical skills, including competency in diagnosis and treatment.  Proficient in concurrent documentation and the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

    Works both independently and part of a team.
