Overseeing Counselors work with Suicidal Clients: Practices for Supervisors Friday, April 8th from 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Zoom Presenter: Dr. Kristin Bruns, LPCC Associate Professor / College Counseling & Student Affairs Program Coordinator,
Department of Psychological Sciences & Counseling, Youngstown State University Program Description: Research suggests counselors perceive working with clients at risk for suicide to be one of the most stressful clinical situations. At this time, there are no skill-based competencies for working with suicidal clients. As many supervisors are clinicians themselves, they need to feel comfortable with managing suicide risk with their own clients, as well as being able to support their supervisees. This presentation will focus on important information that supervisors need to know when working with a supervisee whose client is at risk for suicide. The presentation will focus clients at risk for suicide, primarily in the clinical mental health setting. An emphasis will be placed on skill assessment of supervisees, as well as ethical and legal considerations.
