Process or Behavioral (non-substance) addictions are slowly emerging in the counseling literature and clinical practice as equally powerful and debilitating phenomena as chemical addictions. Technological advances over the past few decades have carved an enormous path into the minds and behaviors of our clients and opened an incredible buffet of outlets for unresolved emotional issues. In contrast, people remain biological creatures attempting to meet certain needs; resulting in an evolutionary mismatch between our human biology and technology. Counselors must be aware of these emerging trends and grow and adapt alongside of the lightning-fast advances of modernity.

Dr. Joshua Francis, Ph.D.  has over 20 years of clinical counseling experience working in community mental health, hospitals, schools, and private practice.  He is licensed as a Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor (LPCC-S) and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor, Clinical Supervisor (LICDC-CS) in the State of Ohio. Dr. Francis has owned and operated a private counseling and consultation practice and is an assistant professor of clinical mental health counseling at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Francis’ clinical specialties and areas of research include child and adolescent mental health, marriage and family therapy, high conflict divorce, trauma, counselor ethics, counselor wellness, evolutionary/primal mental health, and substance and process/behavioral addictions. He is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences.
