The All Ohio Counselors Conference (AOCC) Call for Proposals is now open through Wednesday, April 15!

Preferential consideration will be given to proposals that focus on "Elevate | Our Values, Our Voices, Our Vitality" in correlation with this year’s theme.

The All Ohio Counselors Conference (AOCC) is a continuing education conference sponsored by the Ohio Counseling Association.

This year’s AOCC will be November 4-6 at the Embassy Suites Dublin.

Voting is now open for OCA’s next President-Elect! All OCA members are invited to vote now through March 15th until 11:59pm. Only one vote is allowed per active OCA member.

This officer will serve as President-Elect beginning July 1, 2026 and will become President of the OCA on July 1, 2027. During the year as President-Elect, the learning process includes working closely with the President, Past-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Executive Director to become familiar with the inner workings of the OCA.

The All Ohio Counselors Conference 2024 Call for Proposals is now open through Friday, April 26!

Do you have a successful program you run? A unique way of addressing client/student needs? A community partnership that brings value to your work? An area of expertise or passion? These all make for quality sessions at the All Ohio Counselors Conference (AOCC).

Preferential consideration will be given to proposals that demonstrate creative, novel, and/or advanced techniques and approaches to counseling.

The AOCC is a joint conference hosted by the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) and the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA).

This year's AOCC will be October 28-30, 2024 at the Hyatt Regency in Downtown Columbus.

NOTE: The AOCC will be held again on a Monday-Wednesday.

The AOCC seeks quality proposals that focus on relevant and practical topics related to the school and mental health counseling professions. Please consider sharing your expertise, creative programs and best practices with colleagues from across the state.

Spring Conference 2024 - Registration Now Open!

Registration for the OCA 2024 Virtual Spring Conference is now open! Click here to register and click here to view the event program.

The OCA Spring Conference brings together Counselors from across Ohio to teach, learn, and collaborate on a variety of topics. This year's conference offers two pre-cons and 30 workshops covering ethics, supervision, and general credits. Additionally, plan to join OCA President, Dr. Sherdene Simpson, for a virtual coffee hour and a meet & greet for new members, new professionals, and first-time participants.

We invite all OCA members to attend the keynote presentation with Dr. Casey Barrio Minton, who will be speaking on the conference theme - Shaping the Future of Counseling: Trends and Insights for Tomorrow - on Friday, April 26th from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Registration for the conference is not required for members to attend the keynote presentation.

Spring Conference sessions take place:

Thursday, April 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
Friday, April 26th from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 27th from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

Summer Series 2024: May 25 - July 20, 2024

The OCA Leadership Certificate Program (LCP) is an 8-week experience that is a FREE membership benefit for any graduate student, new professional, or seasoned professional discerning a possible future leadership role or who may already be serving in a position. LCP equips leaders with the most important tools and information they need to successfully hold a leadership position in OCA. Participants learn how to strengthen the effectiveness of a division/chapter/committee by applying best practices in successive leadership and through succession planning. They meet and network with their fellow participant leaders and receive mentorship and guidance for getting involved and helping to move the work of OCA forward.

Except for two 1 hour required in person Zoom gatherings, LCP allows participants to move through the program at their own pace through a series of pre-recorded learning modules. Modules are taught by past and present OCA leaders who share their experiences and insights related to some of the most significant aspects of being a leader in our association. All in person and recorded modules must be completed within the same series for which the participant is registered. The total time commitment is approximately five hours and participants receive a certificate of completion and recognition at the All Ohio Counselor’s Conference.

OCA history and governance
Membership growth
Servant leadership
Budget/finances
Legislative advocacy
Recruiting for diversity and inclusion
The CE approval process
Marketing and social media strategies

The theme is Shaping the Future of Counseling: Trends and Insights for Tomorrow. Practitioners and counselor educators are invited to submit proposals from November 1-November 30, 2023. We seek quality, creative proposals that focus on relevant and practical topics related to the mental health counseling professions. We hope you consider sharing your expertise, creative programs, and best practices with colleagues from across the state.

Additionally, we are looking for at least 10 people to volunteer to review proposals. This is a great opportunity for professional development, and proposal reviewers play a crucial role in ensuring that the Spring Conference has quality sessions!

CALL FOR GRADUATE STUDENT POSTER PRESENTATIONS

SUBMISSION DEADLINE 7/15/2023

The Ohio Counseling Association is calling for master’s and doctoral students to submit to the Graduate Student Poster Session being held at the 2023 All Ohio Counselors Conference (AOCC).

All graduate students are welcome to apply in their research area or topics of interest in the counseling profession. The Poster Session will be held the morning of Tuesday, October 17th.

Also, see the "Poster Presentation Guidelines" on the document to help you design your poster. Proposals are due July 15th 2023, and in order to be accepted you must be a member of OCA and register for AOCC by August 30, 2023. OCA LEADERSHIP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM (LCP)

FALL SERIES

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: AUGUST 7, 2023

This brief, free, and practical experience is designed for any graduate student, new professional, or seasoned professional, who is either a current or emerging leader within OCA. As an alternative to attending a traditional, formal, one-time leadership conference, this certificate process utilizes an in-person virtual and pre-recorded video approach that engages current and future leaders in an opportunity to explore and learn about OCA leadership at their own pace. Attendance at two brief in-person modules are also required. The total time commitment is approximately four hours.

The Leadership Certificate Program will equip leaders with the most important tools and information they need in order to either continue or begin an OCA leadership position. Participants will learn about important information related to OCA executive goals and plans, and gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully hold a leadership role in our state association. Learn to strengthen the effectiveness of your division, chapter, or committee by applying best practices. Participants will also benefit from meeting and networking with other leaders, and will receive mentorship and guidance for next steps for helping to grow and move our state association forward.

Participants must register in advance by selecting a series and should complete all modules within that same series. You will be contacted with more information as the series start date approaches.

Fall Series: August 12 - September 30, 2023
Required in-person attendance via Zoom for Module 1 (Saturday, August 12, 9-10am) and Module 6 (Saturday, September 30, 9-10am)

The Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) Podcast Subcommittee, under the auspices of the OCA Media, Public Relations, and Membership (MPRM) Committee, is pleased to announce the launch of Ohio Counseling Conversations, the official podcast of the Ohio Counseling Association!

Our first episode is live and highlights OCA member, Kailey Bradley (she/her), M.A., LPCC-S, CT, with an important conversation discussing grief, the common misconceptions surrounding it, and why it is important to allow ourselves and our clients to move through this journey in ways that work for them. We hope you'll tune in!

Volunteer to Review Proposals

OCA is pleased to announce our 2023 virtual Spring Conference, which will be held Friday, April 21-Saturday, April 22 via Zoom. Practitioners and counselor educators are invited to submit proposals. We seek quality, creative proposals that focus on relevant and practical topics related to the mental health counseling professions. We hope you consider sharing your expertise, creative programs, and best practices with colleagues from across the state.

This OCA event will attract professional and future counselors from across Ohio, including academic leaders, private practitioners, and student delegates. All sessions will be online and presented live - no recordings will be available for home study.

If interested in submitting a proposal, please complete the continuing education application and upload your current resume and photo via this Google Form: https://forms.gle/5eNdA1ZFQyziAMx26 by the deadline of Sunday, January 29, 2023 at 9:00 pm. You may submit up to two 60-minute presentation proposals.

Selected proposals will be blind reviewed by the proposal committee, certified for CSWMFT CE credit, and listed in the final program. All individuals submitting a proposal will be notified via email of whether or not the proposal has been accepted in early March.

If your proposal is accepted, you must be available to present either Friday, April 21 or Saturday, April 22, 2023. OCA will set the schedule of presentations once the final presentations are approved, and you will be notified in early March of your presentation date and time. All presenters will be required to register for the Conference at a discounted rate.

Additionally, we are looking for at least 10 people to volunteer to review proposals. This is a great opportunity for professional development, and proposal reviewers play a crucial role in ensuring that the Spring Conference has quality sessions! Those selected as reviewers will be asked to review on average 5-10 proposals within the timeframe of January 30 through February 11, 2023. AHC Emerging Leaders Program 2023-2024

Thank you for considering our Emerging Leaders Program!

The AHC Emerging Leaders program was developed to allow students and new professionals to participate in AHC activities, receive mentorship, and connect with professional networking opportunities.

Emerging Leaders are selected to serve from July to July of each AHC fiscal year. Master’s level students, doctoral level students, and new professionals (having graduated in the past year) will be selected as AHC emerging leaders. Recipients must be an AHC member at the time of application. Emerging Leaders choose an area of interest within the division and receive mentoring related to that area. Emerging Leaders will provide a minimum of 50 hours of service to an AHC committee, project, or task over the course of the year, and they will be assigned a mentor with whom they will connect each month. Emerging Leaders will also have opportunities to learn the responsibilities associated with serving in elected leadership positions within AHC. They will also receive FREE conference registration for the AHC conference for the year they are an Emerging Leader.

Emerging Leaders will be featured in our newsletter and recognized at the annual AHC conference.

This is a final reminder that the OCA is hosting a digital t-shirt design contest. T-shirt designs should be centered around the counseling profession and be representative of the OCA. Submissions will be accepted via email, with pdf, jpeg, or png formats preferred. T-shirt designs must be original works.

State of Ohio Ready for Transition to New, Nationwide 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

(COLUMBUS, OH) -- Following 18 months of careful preparation, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is pleased to announce that Ohioans experiencing suicidal crisis, mental health or addiction-related distress will soon be able to call 988, an easy-to-remember three-digit number to access free, 24/7, confidential support for themselves or loved ones. The nationwide 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline goes live on Saturday, July 16.

“Mental health is just as important as physical health,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “988 is a statewide resource that will quickly connect anyone who needs immediate support or crisis treatment to a trained counselor who can listen and connect them with resources. I encourage Ohioans who are in crisis themselves, or helping someone who is, to call 988 for help.”

In 2020, Congress designated the new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline’s (NSPL) network of more than 200 locally operated and funded crisis centers across the country. The service was established to improve access to crisis services in a way that meets the nation’s growing suicide and mental health related crisis care needs. The existing 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) launched in 2005 and will remain active following the transition to 988, as will local helplines and hotlines, keeping important safety nets in place.

“Too often Ohioans in crisis don’t know where to turn for help, and the stigma of asking can keep them from reaching out,” said OhioMHAS Director Lori Criss. “We are working to change all this in Ohio. Moving to a 3-digit crisis number helps increase the visibility of the help available to Ohioans experiencing a mental health or addiction crisis,” said Director Criss. “988 is more than just an easy-to-remember number—it is a direct connection to a compassionate person on the other line who is trained to provide support to anyone in distress – whether that is thoughts of suicide, emotional distress, or substance use crisis.”

To prepare for implementation, Ohio expanded the number of NSPL-affiliated call centers to 19, ensuring Ohioans in all 88 counties have access to coverage and support. Starting July 16 when Ohioans dial 988, they can expect to hear a greeting message while their call is routed to the local Lifeline network crisis center (based on the caller’s area code – see map here). A trained crisis counselor will answer the phone, listen to the caller, provide support, and connect them to additional resources if needed.

Some may struggle with “should I call 911 or 988?” Director Criss explained, “The 988 number will become well known over time, just like 911. We want people to think about: 1. Is this a fire or police emergency or imminent danger to life? CALL 911. 2. Do I need help related to thoughts of suicide, mental health or addiction crisis? CALL 988.”

The Lifeline provides live crisis center phone services in English and Spanish and uses Language Line Solutions to provide translation services in over 250 additional languages for people who call 988. The 988 dialing code will also be available nationwide for text or chat (English only).

“The transition to 988 is another important step in strengthening and transforming crisis care in Ohio,” said RecoveryOhio Director Aimee Shadwick. “Governor DeWine has prioritized making person-centered care more visible, accessible, and effective, and 988 will serve as a front door into Ohio’s crisis care system.”

There are urgent realities driving the need for crisis service transformation across the United States. In 2020 alone, the U.S. had one death by suicide about every 11 minutes—and for people aged 10 – 34 years, suicide is a leading cause of death. Additionally, from April 2020 to 2021, over 100,000 individuals died from drug overdoses. Numerous studies have shown that most Lifeline callers are significantly more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful after speaking to a Lifeline crisis counselor. Studies have shown that approximately 80 percent of calls made to a crisis line can be resolved through a phone conversation, alleviating burdens on local law enforcement and hospital systems.

OhioMHAS has identified federal funding to support the implementation and year one of operations for 988. During this first year of operations OhioMHAS will carefully monitor call volumes and system needs and continue working with the General Assembly to identify funding for long-term sustainability of 988.

In recent years, Ohio has prioritized $69 million in state GRF dollars to strengthen and support crisis services in communities throughout the state. In March, Governor DeWine devoted a significant portion of his State of the State Address to his vision for the future of behavioral health in Ohio. In May, he announced his proposal to infuse $85 million in federal resources to strengthen and expand Ohio’s behavioral health care workforce to help meet rising demand for mental health and substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services. Governor DeWine also announced an $84 million Pediatric Behavioral Health Initiative. On July 1, Governor DeWine announced the launch of OhioRISE – a first-ever, highly-specialized behavioral health program for Ohio children with complex behavioral health needs.

A national 988 public awareness campaign is not expected until 2023. OhioMHAS and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration have provided many resources to help Ohio communities understand the transition to 988 and communicate the change to residents.

American Counseling Association Expresses Opposition to Overturn of Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court decision striking down Roe v. Wade abolishes women’s constitutional right to choose to have an abortion without the undue influence of government. This decision will trigger some state regulations, which will make abortions outright illegal and/or limiting accessibility. Various jurisdictions have proposed laws and regulations that require clinicians report clients who have sought or are seeking an abortion, as it may be considered “aiding and abetting.”

We recognize that the loss of access to safe, legal abortion may hinder the ability of women to participate within the workplace and society effectively and successfully. Unwanted pregnancies may affect women’s education, employment, earning prospects, and health. These effects would disproportionately fall on those who are already marginalized, those living in poverty, people of color, nonbinary, and transgender people, as well as those who live in medically underserved areas (e.g., few primary care providers, high infant mortality, high poverty).

Overturning Roe v. Wade means we can expect an increase in economic hardship and insecurity that may lead to increased stress, lower life satisfaction, decreased work productivity, increased turnover, and decreased mental well-being. Professional counselors assist clients and students facing life’s challenges such as the deeply personal decision to have an abortion, and how to access such services.

The American Counseling Association (ACA) stands with every person, counselor, and client in pursuit of mental health care and wellness. Professional counselors are being placed in an unethical position. In counseling, clients are entitled to self-determination and to make decisions in the best interest of their health and well-being. Clients should have access to high-quality professional counseling without the fear of having their confidentiality unjustly waived. This requires safeguarding the integrity and trust built in the counselor-client relationship.

Professional counselors need to continue to practice ethically and obtain a legal consultation to determine their duty to confidentiality and privacy versus the conflict either in Roe v. Wade or the restrictions their state has put in place. Professional counselors may request an opinion from their State Attorney General who can give an official interpretation of the law.

The Community Counseling Clinic at Youngstown State University is providing FREE telehealth counseling sessions this summer.

Because we are offering Telehealth, we can provide services to people around Ohio.

We are a training clinic for students earning their degrees in counseling. As such, clients are screened and we can't see people with severe mental health needs or addictions who need services greater than what we can provide.

We are also excited to share that this year’s conference will be free to all attendees to make it more accessible!

Conversion Therapy - OCA and the State of Ohio

As the Chairman of your Government Relations Committee for OCA, I love that you all are engaging in conversation regarding legislative advocacy! All these questions (and more) are what we as professional counselors and stakeholders in the legislative process must ask ourselves for ALL aspects of our work.

Although I will not address all of questions posed through this thread, I did want to clarify this bill and the legislative process at hand, as well as invite all of you who are passionate about this topic or other legislative issues to contact me or any of the Governmental Relations Committee Members (most chapters/divisions have a representative that serves on OCA's government relations committee as a liaison between the committee and a division/chapter).

1. Many have pointed this out, but practicing conversion therapy as a licensed counselor is a violation of our code of ethics, specifically as it relates to "doing harm" to clients as research has identified conversion therapy as holding great potential for harm (see ACAs website)

2. 6 cities in Ohio already ban the practice of conversion therapy with minors

3. The practice of conversion therapy with a minor in the state of Ohio by an individual that holds a license issued by the OCSWMFT board may result in board discipline, including license suspension. This was an initiative championed by Equality Ohio that OCA and the Government Relations Committee supported a couple years ago. Out of this initiative came a strong statement from the board regarding conversion therapy with its licensees. 4. The proposed bill is more expansive than the OCSWMFT board, but in essence, will place the boards current stance on conversion therapy with a minor into Ohio Revised Code language, ORC 4757.46. The current ramifications for practicing conversion therapy with a minor involve licensure discipline. If enacted in law, would involve both licensure discipline and legal discipline. If you have any specific questions or concerns regarding OCA's legislative efforts through our Governmental Relations Committee, please feel free to reach out to me or one of our committee members! I love legislative advocacy and our hope within OCA is to connect you as a member to the process of legislative advocacy.

Also, every spring we hold a Legislative Advocacy Day in Columbus Ohio at the State House where we engage in may aspects of the legislative process (Conversion Therapy was a heavy topic of discussion 2 years ago). Dont miss out on your opportunity to be proactive in the legislative process instead of just reactive to supporting or fighting legislation others propose.

WITH ALL OF THIS SAID, I always encourage every individual to advocate and promote a legislative agenda that is congruent with YOUR BELIEFS, even if that goes in opposition of OCA.

Charles "Chuck" Weaver Award: One who has shown long, consistent and distinguished service to the counseling profession and who has shown exemplary caring for people.

Herman J. Peters Award: One who promotes innovative ideas and theories in the counseling field and has a significant impact on future trends.

Susan J. Sears Counselor of the Year Award: One who has gone beyond the call of duty by demonstrating exceptional service as a practitioner and/or counselor educator, through the application of OCA goals.

Research & Writing Award: One who has demonstrated extraordinary research and writing ability, as evidenced by journal publications for the counseling profession.

Public Policy & Legislation Award: One who has demonstrated excellent advocacy by engaging in meaningful lobbying on behalf of the counseling profession.

Graduate Student Award: The purpose of this award is to recognize a counseling graduate student who has excelled: in service to OCA and the counseling profession; counseling-related extracurricular or co-curricular involvements; and has demonstrated excellence and commitment to the profession.

Professional Leadership Award: This award recognizes and honors persons who through their vision, leadership, and concern for others and the profession have strengthened, expanded, and enhanced the counseling profession within Ohio.

President Adrianne Johnson was awarded the National Branch Advocacy Award at the ACA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. This award is presented to the State or Branch Chapter that is seen as exemplary in their motivated efforts to protect clients from harm, to shape licensure language, and promote ethical clinical practice in their state. The OCA was also awarded this honor in 2016, 2013 and 2011.

The 2019 All Ohio Counselors Conference Call for Proposals is now open. This year’s AOCC will be held November 6-8, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus.

The AOCC is a joint conference hosted by the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) and the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA). The AOCC seeks quality proposals that focus on relevant and practical topics related to the school and mental health counseling professions. Please consider sharing your expertise, creative programs and best practices with colleagues from across the state.

Amanda Sines, our Lobbyist announced this morning that Lori Criss has been named the Director of ODMHAS. Criss is currently a leader in the Ohio Council of Behavioral Health Provider’s. Amanda works with her often on issues of importance to OCA. This is a very strong choice by Gov Elect DeWine and good for OCA members!

HB 81 - Exempt mentally ill from death penalty

Next week the Ohio House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on H.B. 81 which exempts individuals who were seriously mentally ill at the time of their crime from the death penalty. Anything you can do to contact your legislators in the House and urge them to vote yes would be greatly appreciated! All members of OCA and their peers/coworkers/staff are encouraged to take action.
